Ruby and Rose Gold

The pair comes from the late 20th century, shaped in a European workshop where gold was worked slowly and stones were set to last. Little here is ornament for its own sake — the mountings stay plain, and the rubies are left to carry the design. What remains, decades on, is a small, sure piece of benchwork, its proportions still intact.

A ruby's red is a settled colour — it asks for little beyond the gold that holds it. Such stones have long been chosen to mark attachment: an anniversary, a promise, a birthday. Here, against rose gold, the red reads as closeness rather than display.
