The Ruby, Plainly Set

Shaped by European silversmithing of the late twentieth century, these earrings favour few lines and careful proportion. The setting is kept spare, so the eye goes first to the red of the stone rather than to the metal around it. Nothing is added for effect; the silver's work is to hold the ruby steady and let it speak.

Ruby is a stone of few intermediaries: its red needs no explanation and invites none. Where paler stones recede, it stands its ground — a point of warmth set against the coolness of silver. Together the two materials settle into an easy contrast, each leaving the other room.
